Melvin Sides

Melvin Sides passed away September 7, 2022 surrounded by family at his home in Reagan, Oklahoma.  Melvin was born February 25, 1936 in Princeton, Texas to James Sides and Lillian (Payne) Sides. 

On April 21, 1962, he married the love of his life, Barbara (Pat) Wright. A union that lasted 60 years until Pat's death in April of 2022.  Melvin and Pat made their home in Garland, TX where he was employed as a Shipping Dock Manager for Weyerhaeuser.  When they moved back to Oklahoma, Melvin worked as a plant operator at Pennsylvania Glass Sand (currently U.S. Silica) for 11 years and retired there.  Melvin and Pat later moved to the coast in Quintana, Tx. They spent 20 years there enjoying life to the fullest. Melvin built them a beach house.   He was active in his community in Quintana and served on the city council and as the pro tem mayor at one time. 

Melvin was a man of many talents and gifts.  He could pick up any instrument and play it. He was a songwriter as well as a singer.  Laura Bush visited Quintana one time and he had the honor of singing a song for her that he had written. 

He loved woodworking.  He built a sleigh and reindeer one year.  He and Pat would dress as Santa and Mrs. Clause and were able to sit inside the sleigh.

Melvin was an avid gardener and was good at it.  He enjoyed baking, fishing, and spending time with his family.  Melvin was an intelligent, loyal, and hard-working man who believed in honesty, integrity, and family.  He will be missed by his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Pat, both parents; brothers, Howard Sides, Ed Sides, and Jimmy Don Sides; a sister, Nelda Krebbs; and grandson, Jerry Len.

Melvin is survived by his daughters, Vickie Pruitt and husband, David of Reagan and Renita Walker of Reagan; sister, Laura Mahler and husband Lowell of Tishomingo; brother in law, Jerry Wright and wife, Sue of Claremore, OK; grandchildren, Jeremy Pruitt and wife, Sarah and Chad Pruitt; great-grandchildren, Jaxon, Jenna, Bailey, Jace, Brylan, Kynlee, Ryder, River, and Easton and numerous other relatives and friends.

Graveside services to honor and celebrate the life of Melvin Sides will be held Thursday, September 15, 2022 at 10 am at Condon Grove Cemetery with Reverend Roger Hartwell officiating.

Services are under the care and direction of Hartwell Funeral Home.
